DENVER-

A man accused of being the getaway driver in the 1984 machine-gun slaying of radio talk show host Alan Berg has died of suspected natural causes in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind., officials said Tuesday.

David Lane, 68, was serving a 150 year sentence for violating the civil rights of Berg, who was gunned down in front of his Denver residence in June 1984. Lane was found dead Monday, though Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Mike Truman did not immediately know where Lane’s body was found.

Truman said Lane had a heart condition.

“There was no crime scene or anything, but an autopsy will be done,” Truman said

Lane along with co-defendant Bruce Pierce was convicted of civil rights violations in 1987 in the shooting of Berg, who was targeted by a Nazi-like group known as The Order for comments on his radio show about white supremacists and their beliefs. Berg was Jewish.

Two others were acquitted of federal civil rights violations. State prosecutors refused to file murder charges.

Lane, Pierce, and two others were convicted of racketeering counts and sentenced to at least 40 years in prison each, with Pierce receiving a 100 year sentence.
