CRAIG, Colo.-
Three people were killed when a vehicle drove off a road and fell 125 feet over a cliff early Friday, authorities said.
Police Chief Walt Vanatta said investigators had not determined the cause, “and frankly, we may never know.”
The victims were in a Jeep Cherokee that drove off a scenic road above the Sandrocks Nature Trail at about 1:40 a.m. and landed on its top, authorities said. The bodies had to be extricated from the wreckage, a police report said.
“We had a witness who saw the car coming over the cliff, but other than that we have nothing on top (of the cliff) that would indicate fast erratic driving or anything like that,” Vanatta told the Craig Daily Press.
The victims were Waylon William Owens, 28, David Kim Johnston, 32, and Jaron Earl Green, 31, police spokeswoman Becky Otis said.
Sherie Moya said her two sons saw the crash through their bedroom window.
“They described it as seeing sparks as it was going over and a very loud boom when it hit the bottom,” she said.
