A semi-truck careened off U.S. 285 near Conifer and smashed into a vacant building, igniting on impact and killing the driver, Colorado State Patrol officials said.

Five minutes before the Friday crash, the driver of the truck had been pulled over by a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy because his left blinker was on for miles, said Jim Shires, spokesman for the department.

A motorist had also called in to report the truck was weaving in and out of lanes, but the deputy didn’t witness it, Shires said. “The deputy felt that everything was in order,” he said. “He told him to turn his signal off.”
