Six FBI employees were briefly quarantined Tuesday after a scare involving a package containing a suspicious substance at the FBI’s downtown Denver headquarters.

The scare started a little before 1:30 p.m., FBI spokeswoman Rene VonderHaar said. An employee in the mailroom opened a package and found a suspicious substance. VonderHaar said she didn’t know what the substance looked like.

The FBI called the Denver Fire Department, which sent a hazardous-materials team to investigate. The 16th floor of the federal building at 16th and Stout streets was locked down, and six employees who came into contact with the package were quarantined.

After conducting tests on the substance and the air in the room, the Fire Department determined the substance was not hazardous and turned the situation over to the FBI, said Denver Fire Lt. Phil Champagne.

VonderHaar said the quarantined employees were released. The FBI is still investigating what the substance is.
