FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State University plans to more than double some parking fees over the next four years to help pay for a new parking structure.

Beginning this fall, a plan approved by the university’s Board of Governors will raise the cost of yearly parking for students from the current $85 to $234 by 2011. Residence hall student permits will increase from $143 to $303, and faculty fees will rise from $95 to $261 over the next four years.

The fees are necessary to deal with the loss of 600 parking spaces to future construction projects, said CSU parking commander Dave Bradford.

The fees were expected to bring in $2.9 million in revenue that will go toward the construction of at least one parking facility.

Parking has been tight for a numbers of years on campus, which has about 10,500 spaces for students and faculty.

CSU junior Adriana Lopez last bought a parking permit her freshman year and doesn’t plan to buy one next year because having one does not guarantee finding a parking spot. Instead, she said she’ll ride the bus or keep parking on packed side streets leading into the university.

“Students can’t afford that. I know we have to do something about the problem, but it just seems there has to be another way,” she said.
