Boy killed in go-kart hit-and-run crash
An 8-year-old boy was killed and his 10-year-old brother injured Saturday night when a hit-and-run driver crashed into the go-kart they were riding, Westminster police said.
Police were searching for the driver of the vehicle who hit the go-kart at about 6:30 p.m. near Mandalay Middle School, investigator Stephanie Topkoff said.
The boys, who were staying with their grandparents while their parents are traveling, were driving the go-kart down 96th Avenue near Pierce Street.
Police had not found any witnesses to the crash, but said the first people to arrive afterward performed CPR on the younger boy. His older brother was walking around in a daze, Topkoff said.
The 10-year-old was in stable condition at Children’s Hospital with cuts and bruises.
The names of the children were not released because police had not been able to reach their parents, Topkoff said.
She asked anyone who notices new, unexplained damage to a vehicle to call Westminster police.

Zoo euthanizes male giraffe born in wild
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has euthanized its male giraffe Laikipia, who was born in the wild in Kenya in 1981.
Laikipia’s mobility had become restricted due to degenerative joint disease aggravated by abnormal hoof growth, zoo officials said. With Laikipia becoming unresponsive to pain medication, zoo officials decided to euthanize him.
He was euthanized shortly after the birth Wednesday of a 6-foot-2-inch, 179-pound female calf he sired with the 17-year-old mother, Uhura, zoo officials said.

In the past, CDOT officials have said rail is too expensive, as much as $8 billion.

Accused drifter says boyfriend was leader
A member of a band of drifters accused of killing a group member and torturing an 11-year-old boy said her boyfriend was the ringleader.
“I am not a monster,” Candace Clark told reporters from the Portage Daily Register and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel who interviewed her at Columbia County Jail in Wisconsin on Friday.
Grand Junction authorities have issued warrants for the arrest of Clark and her boyfriend, Michael Sisk, who are wanted on identity-theft-related charges.
Clark said no one was innocent, including the boy. “Everybody’s making him out to be perfect,” she said. “He’s not.”
Police acted on a tip June 14 and searched a house where they found the boy bloody with burn marks and locked in a closet.
They also found the body of 36-year-old Tammie Garlin buried behind the house.

Organizers cancel Juneteenth festival
Denver’s annual Juneteenth festival scheduled for Saturday in City Park was canceled by event organizers.
Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, the day Texas slaves were freed by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Last year, Juneteenth celebrations were held in the Five Points neighborhood and at the nearby Kingdom of Glory Church.
The event’s organizers, The Nineteenth of June Community Celebration Inc., on their website blamed the cancellation on the event producer – The PR Shop, LLC.
