GRANBY, Colo.—A wildfire Monday forced the evacuation of 300 campers and counselors at a YMCA camp and prompted officials to warn residents in 118 homes to be ready to leave.
Grand County officials originally estimated the fire had scorched 300 acres, but later revised that to 50 acres. Grand County dispatcher Michelle Gowen said the fire was at least 50 percent contained.
YMCA spokeswoman Kellen Schaffer said the campers and counselors at the YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch were evacuated to Granby Middle School as a precaution. She said the fire had burned a portion of the 5,100 acre property but wasn’t threatening any buildings.
Several staff members remained in a central location at the camp.
The fire was burning south of Granby, which is about 60 miles northwest of Denver.
