A couple facing allegations that they let their 7-year-old niece die from physical abuse, acute dehydration and malnutrition while she was in their care face preliminary hearings in August.
Genevieve Barea, 45, and Barea’s husband, Dan Partch, 47, made a brief appearance in Weld County District Court today. Both are being held in Weld County Jail on a charge each of child abuse resulting in death in connection with the March 9 death of LoReyna Barea.
District Judge James Hartmann ordered an Aug. 8 preliminary hearing for Genevieve Barea and an Aug. 10 preliminary hearing for Partch.
LoReyna was in the custody of her aunt and uncle. Police were called to the couple’s Evans home on March 9 and found the girl severely underweight and with several bruises on her body. Court documents said paramedics and fire personnel pronounced LoReyna dead at 2:47 a.m.
An autopsy revealed 49 bruises and 19 abrasions, both old and new, on her body. She also was dehydrated and malnourished, the autopsy said.
