AURORA, Colo.—Three members of an a family died after their car was hit by a tow truck in a multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday.
Police Detective Shannon Lucy identified the dead as William O’Neil, 40, his 43-year-old wife, Karen, and 4-year-old son, Trevor. All were wearing seatbelts.
The O’Neil’s son, Tyler, age 2 1/2, was taken to Children’s Hospital and was in fair condition Thursday. Passers-by had to pluck him from the mangled wreckage of the car.
The crash was being investigated Thursday. No charges have been filed.
A total of four vehicles were involved in the accident on Chambers Road. According to police, a tow truck traveling northbound first hit a Honda CRV then crossed over into the southbound lanes and hit a Nissan Murano before hitting the O’Neil’s Chrysler 300M.
“They were good people, very friendly—just a good family,” neighbor Robert Englehardt said.
Tyler’s grandmother, Marcie Frostman, 75, told The Denver Post that Karen O’Neil was a stay-at-home mother who always did something with the children, such as taking them to the zoo.
William O’Neil worked for a computer company, she said.
