GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The names of two people killed in an Independence Day crash and fire along Interstate 70 near Wolcott were still being withheld Friday because their next of kin had not yet been notified, authorities said.
The Colorado State Patrol said a Toyota 4Runner was eastbound at about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday when it went off the left side of the road and into the median. The SUV then crossed back over to the right shoulder, flipped and rolled before landing on its wheels.
The driver and a passenger both died at the scene. It was unclear whether they were wearing seat belts, but neither victim was ejected, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Trooper Brian Koch termed the victims foreigners, and said it takes time to notify all of the family members in such situations.
Investigators said speed was a likely factor in the crash. Authorities were also looking into whether drugs and alcohol might have been involved.
