GOLDEN, Colo.—A skier who fell Saturday in the backcountry on Rollins Pass died from the injuries, and another skier was injured in the same area in a separate accident, Gilpin County sheriff’s officials said.

County dispatchers received word of the first skier in the Crater Lakes area at 12:22 p.m., authorities said. Rescuers flew to the area by helicopter but were unable to land due to the terrain and conditions. Dispatchers were told around 1:50 p.m. that the victim died from injuries of the fall, sheriff’s officials said.

Minutes later, dispatchers were called on the second skier, who was unable to walk after falling was believed to have suffered broken bones.

Sheriff’s officials said both victims were skiing with groups. Their identities were not immediately released.
