Houston – Carlos Beltran hit a go-ahead single in the 17th inning after making a tremendous catch as the New York Mets won their longest game since 1993, beating the Houston Astros 5-3 on Saturday.

The 17 innings matched the most in the majors this season – the Dodgers and Padres also played that many in April.

Houston threatened to win it in the 14th, putting a runner on third with two outs. Luke Scott launched a long drive to center field and Beltran, familiar with playing in the ballpark with the Astros, ran up the grass hill and caught the ball while falling down.

Beltran was 0-for-6 before his tiebreaking hit. David Wright, whose homer in the seventh made it 3-all, followed with an RBI single.

PADRES 8, BRAVES 5 at San Diego: Pitcher David Wells was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes, and Atlanta’s Jo-Jo Reyes didn’t last much longer in his big-league debut as San Diego beat the Braves behind home runs by Mike Cameron and Khalil Greene.

CUBS 7, PIRATES 1 at Pittsburgh: Ted Lilly (8-4) pitched neatly into the eighth inning, Alfonso Soriano got three hits and Chicago won for the 12th time in 15 games.

MARLINS 7, DODGERS 2 at Los Angeles: Hanley Ramirez had four hits, Miguel Cabrera and Josh Willingham homered in the fourth inning, and Florida finally backed Sergio Mitre with enough offense for a victory over Los Angeles.

GIANTS 7, CARDINALS 6 at St. Louis: Barry Bonds went 0-for-2, drew two more walks and stayed put at 751 homers, Randy Winn hit a two-run single and San Francisco scored three unearned runs on Aaron Miles’ trio of seventh-inning errors in a win over St. Louis.

REDS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4 at Cincinnati: Slumping Norris Hopper singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and Cincinnati overcame another bullpen meltdown to beat Arizona.

NATIONALS 5, BREWERS 4 at Washington: Austin Kearns’ two-run double – his first extra-base hit in 15 games – capped a four-run rally in the fifth and Washington edged Milwaukee.
