Detroit – Ivan Rodriguez’s two-out RBI single in the 13th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
David Ortiz homered, doubled and walked four times – three intentional – for Boston, but the Red Sox left 12 runners on base and didn’t score after two first-inning runs.
While the Tigers avoided their 1,000th defeat to the Red Sox, they did lose all-star second baseman Placido Polanco in the eighth inning to a strained rib-cage muscle. His status is day to day.
Jonathan Papelbon (0-2) hit Gary Sheffield to start the 13th, and with one out Sheffield stole second.
Carlos Guillen took a called third strike, but Rodriguez lined a 1-0 pitch into the right- center field gap, and the ball glanced off the glove of a diving Coco Crisp as Sheffield trotted home.
ANGELS 2, YANKEES 1 (13) at New York: Fill-in first baseman Miguel Cairo made two errors on one play in the 13th inning, allowing Los Angeles to edge New York after a spirited pitchers’ duel between Roger Clemens and all-star John Lackey.
Clemens went pitch-for- pitch with Lackey, who matched his career high with 11 strikeouts.
MARINERS 4, ATHLETICS 0 at Oakland, Calif.: Felix Hernandez held Oakland scoreless for a second straight start and Adrian Beltre homered for the third time in two games, leading Seattle to a victory.
WHITE SOX 3, TWINS 1 at Chicago: Mark Buehrle (6-4) allowed six hits over eight scoreless innings to lead Chicago over Minnesota.
INDIANS 9, BLUE JAYS 4 at Toronto: Casey Blake hit a three-run homer, Fausto Carmona (10-4) won back-to-back starts for the first time in almost two months and Cleveland routed Toronto.
ORIOLES 3, RANGERS 0 at Arlington, Texas: Erik Bedard struck out 15 to tie a franchise record and allowed two hits in his first career shutout, leading Baltimore over Texas.
ROYALS 8, DEVIL RAYS 7 at Kansas City, Mo.: Mark Grud- zielanek’s RBI single off Shawn Camp with two out in the ninth inning lifted Kansas City to a victory over Tampa Bay.
