DENVER—Democratic Representative Ed Perlmutter wasn’t in the porn or adult dating business even though his campaign Web site featured bikini-clad women and brought up links to sites featuring “cheating wives” and local girls for sex.

Perlmutter had nothing to do with what visitors to found until Friday, when the site went blank.

Perlmutter spokesman Scott Chase wasn’t sure what happened, but he said he had been in a weeks-long battle to purchase the site from Sedo, a Web site clearinghouse company. After negotiations failed, an attorney sent the company a cease and desist letter.

“It’s down, we think it’s been resolved,” Chase said. “We were willing to purchase it for a normal fee.”

Problem was, the price kept going up until Chase said: “We’re not going to kowtow to some pathetic cyberspace squatters,”

A phone number for the Cambridge, Mass.-base company was not immediately available and an e-mail request for comment was not immediately returned.

Sedo was able to get the domain name when the campaign’s registration expired after November’s election.
