Golden – On Tuesday, residents in the Apple Meadows neighborhood near Colorado 58 and West 58th Avenue received small, white flier stating that a sex offender had moved into the area.
The fliers advertise a website, at a cost of $4.95 per month, where residents may “find out who they (sex offenders) are and what their address is,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office officials said.
Not only does the site contain inaccuracies, officials said, there’s no information that there are newly relocated sex offenders in the Apple Meadows area.
Free information on registered sex offenders is posted on the sheriff’s website, which is.

Power outage, smoke clear CU buildings
After a construction accident damaged a power line, the attempt to make repairs caused smoking transformers and massive power outages at the University of Colorado on Tuesday.
Twelve buildings were affected and several were evacuated, including two residence halls where smoke was reported from elevator motors.
Firefighters responded to the Engineering Center complex just before 9 a.m.
They found an overloaded transformer filling the aerospace and electrical engineering departments with smoke.
Fire alarms also were sounded at Libby and Baker residence halls, which were temporarily evacuated, along with Farrand Hall.
In Farrand Hall, the alarm was triggered by a buildup of steam in the dining room kitchen. Dining rooms in Libby and Farrand halls were closed over lunchtime.

3 get probation after baby-selling allegation
A married couple and another woman have been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanors in what initially appeared to be negotiations over selling a baby.
The sentences, handed down Monday, stem from a case that began in February when the woman was accused of trying to sell her 5-month-old son to the couple. After an investigation, prosecutors dismissed all charges but the misdemeanors.
During the court hearing, Jose Juan Lerma, 48, his wife, Irene Lerma, 28, and Nicole Uribe-Lopez, 23, each pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of having a false document notarized to reflect that Lerma was the father of Uribe’s child.
Each of the three was sentenced to probation based on his or her plea agreement, and the baby remains with representatives of the Pueblo County Department of Social Services.

Lawmakers agree on bark-beetle legislation
All members of Colorado’s congressional delegation said Tuesday that they’ve agreed on legislation to combat the problem of trees infested with bark beetles. The group backs a bill introduced by Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., and Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.
The legislation provides funding to create and implement plans to prevent wildfires, including removing dead timber or clearing brush. The bill also provides money for research grants to study ways to process the material taken from the forests, instead of treating it as refuse.
The legislation allows the state forest service to work on state and federal lands to clear timber or whatever else it deems is necessary to reduce the fire risk. There are also tax incentives for people who help remove fire risks.
The bill is not expected to move quickly through the House or the Senate.
