A Larimer County judge set an Oct. 9 court date for Michelle Berra, the driver who hit the two Berthoud wrestlers who later lost their legs.

Today in court, Berra pleaded not guilty to the two counts of careless driving against her.

The Larimer County district attorney’s office had asked for an extra month to investigate the case after more details about the Jan. 15 accident emerged.

John Chanin, Berra’s lawyer, had said the two injured classmates, Nikko Landeros and Tyler Carron, may have been drinking the night of the crash and, according to a police report, were in the middle of the road changing a flat tire when they were hit, not on the shoulder as first reported.

If convicted, Berra could face a sentencing range of 10 days to a year in jail, a fine of $100 to $1,000, or a combination plus probation.
