DENVER—Three police officers were injured when a gun went off during a scuffle with a person armed with a .357 Magnum, according to police and media reports. The armed person was also wounded.
A Colorado State Patrol officer was shot in the foot and an Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the arm, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said during a news conference.
A third Arapahoe County deputy suffered a broken nose, according to television reports.
The three officers were staffing a DUI checkpoint and had stopped a man who had pulled into a convenience store, police said. After conducting a background check, officers found he had a warrant for his arrest and were preparing to take him into custody.
That’s when a passenger in the car emerged with a gun, resulting in the scuffle.
The checkpoint, set up near a housing project south of Invesco Field at Mile High, was being conducted by the Metro DUI Task Force, a multi jurisdictional group comprised of state troopers and metro law enforcement agencies.
