PUEBLO, Colo.—Democratic state Rep. Dorothy Butcher will run for Pueblo County commissioner next year when term limits force her to leave the state House.
Butcher announced her plans Sunday. She said she would rather work on local issues than seek a term in the state Senate.
Butcher is halfway through her third term in the House. In the 2007 session, she helped pass a bill that lets state prison inmates work on farms to alleviate a labor shortage attributed to a crackdown on illegal immigration.
Butcher is a former city councilwoman and union leader who retired from Qwest Communications International Inc.
Democrat John B. Cordova, a retired traffic engineer with the Colorado Department of Transportation, is also running for the same commissioner’s position.
