Boulder Beer Co. Cold Hop British-Style Ale, $6.99 a six-pack

What do you get when you cross a medium-flavored, English-style ale synonymous with fish and chips, and one of Colorado’s more ubiquitous supermarket brews? A thoroughly drinkable beer that recalls the best of both British and Rocky Mountain brewing traditions.

Boulder Beer Co., with an assist from Charlie Papazian, author of “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing,” introduces Cold Hop as the seventh release of its Looking Glass Series.

The beer pours out in a rich amber hue that lightens a bit upon settling, and tops itself off with a lightly creamy head. A strong burst of hops seasoned with a complementary fruitiness greets you upon the first sip, but these flavors are soon balanced out by a milder, earthy tone. | Boulder Beer Co.; | Barry Osborne
