SAN DIEGO—Reliever Brian Fuentes was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday night by Colorado, which then lost Willy Taveras to an injury in the game against the Padres.
The left-handed Fuentes won’t return as closer. Fuentes had been the Rockies’ closer for most of the season, with 20 saves in 26 opportunities, but blew four straight saves during a road trip and was demoted.
He went on the DL on July 13, retroactive to July 4, with a mild back strain.
Fuentes took the roster spot of Tim Harikkala, who was designated for assignment on Sunday after starting against Chicago.
Taveras left Tuesday night’s 8-0 loss with a right quad injury. Manager Clint Hurdle said Taveras will be placed on the disabled list on Wednesday. He had been battling a quad injury for the last few weeks and aggravated it beating out an infield single in the first. He was replaced by Cory Sullivan starting the bottom of the fourth.
