Dweezil Zappa’s note- for-note tribute to his father did so well at the Paramount Theatre in October that his Denver reprise finds him at a larger venue.
“Zappa Plays Zappa,” Dweezil’s obsessively detailed rendering of Frank’s diverse, guitar- heavy compositions, will hit the Fillmore Auditorium on Nov. 16 with a different lineup but many of the same tunes.
“My favorite era happens to coincide with the fan base’s era, roughly 1969 to ’79,” Dweezil told The Denver Post last year. “I think it’s when he really hit his stride, blending rock and jazz and funk and classical.”
Apparently a few thousand Denverites agree. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($45, Ticketmaster)
Loreena McKennitt may be Canadian, but her music is all Celtic. The eclectic New Age artist traces many of her influences to her classical upbringing and love of Irish music, even as she draws from world beat, jazz and Spanish styles. Tickets for McKennitt’s Oct. 5 concert at the Paramount Theatre are on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday. ($35-$75, Ticketmaster)
Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood know a thing or two about improv, having spent years on the cheeky “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Now the duo is creating an interactive show that lifts suggestions – and participants – from the audience to create the comedy program. Tickets for Mochrie and Sherwood’s Oct. 13 Buell Theatre set are on sale at 10 a.m. today. ($34.50-$47.50, Ticketmaster)
Anúna may not enjoy a high mainstream profile, but the Irish act is big business, its “Celtic Origins” CD shooting up World Music charts like a loose-limbed Riverdancer strapped to a jet pack. The medieval-leaning chorale ensemble plays the Paramount Theatre on Nov. 11. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($38-$63.50, TicketHorse)
Okkervil River needed a thick stack of towels to wipe the critical drool off its 2005 disc “Black Sheep Boy.” Follow-up “The Stage Names” retains the dark lyrics and propulsive melodies but charts a sunnier, more road-tested course. The band drives it into the Marquis Theater on Sept. 13. Tickets are on sale now. ($12, TicketWeb)
Atmosphere leads an indie hip-hop all-star lineup when it plays the Ogden Theatre with Rhymesayers cohorts Mac Lethal, Grayskul and LuckyIam of Living Legends. Tickets for the Oct. 12 set are on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. ($25, Ticketmaster)
Blue October just played here last Friday (at Coors Amphitheatre with Social Distortion), but the band’s burgeoning pop-rock wave will toss it around the states until it returns to Denver on Oct. 20. Tickets for the Fillmore Auditorium show with Yellowcard, Shiny Toy Guns and Lovedrug are on sale at 10 a.m. today. ($35, Ticketmaster)
Motion City Soundtrack is more lyrically clever than its pop-punk peers, if no less earnest and cookie-cutter in its melodies and execution. The band hits the Fillmore Auditorium on Dec. 9 with Mae, Anberlin and Metro Station. Tickets are on sale now. ($22, Ticketmaster)
