Presidential contender Sam Brownback set a goal of ending cancer deaths in 10 years as rival Mike Huckabee used a health care forum Tuesday to suggest food stamp participants get more buying power for healthy foods and less for junk food.

They were the only GOP contenders to show up for the second day of a forum on cancer sponsored by cyclist Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong foundation, following by a day appearances by Democrats who included Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. While 3,000 people attended the Monday event, fewer than 1,000 people attended the Tuesday forum, organizers said.

Minnesota Dems move caucuses

Minnesota Democrats announced Tuesday that they will join Republicans in moving caucuses up to Feb. 5, when two dozen states are set to hold presidential preference contests.

In July, the state GOP authorized the switch from the previous date for both parties’ contests, joining a movement nationwide to accelerate the presidential nominating process.

Seeking to leap to the front of the pack, Florida has moved its primary to Jan. 29 and Michigan is in the process of moving to January. Both risk punishment from the Democratic National Committee. The DNC’s rules panel voted last week to strip Florida of its convention delegates unless state Democrats move back the primary to Feb. 5 or later. The Nevada caucuses and South Carolina’s GOP primary are also set for January.
