Charitable organizations wouldn’t exist without volunteers or benefactors, and while those who are generous with their time and money might insist they aren’t doing it for the recognition, deep down inside they’ve gotta feel good when someone notices and says thanks.

In no particular order, here are some of the groups giving awards – and the lucky recipients:

Former Denver Nugget Bill Hanzlik, now CEO of the Gold Crown Foundation, receives the Friend of Children Award on Oct. 6 when Advocates for Children hosts its 11th Red Wagon Ball. Yvonne Englard Zuber’s dedication to the University of Denver’s Holocaust Awareness Institute is to be recognized at the Nov. 28 Remembrance & Hope Dinner that is to be followed by a performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

At Collectors’ Choice 27, the Denver Art Museum honors the lasting commitment that Virginia and Scott Reiman have made. Chairwoman Nancy Leprino Henry notes that guests at this Sept. 29 dinner also will be treated to a preview of the exhibition Artisans & Kings: Selected Treasures from the Louvre.

Jewish Family Service is going to present its Jack Shapiro Award for Community Service to Blanca and Howard Lerman at Reel Hope: Take 12. The Dec. 12 night at the movies also honors Steve Kris with the Kal Zeff Business Leader of the Year award.

One of the first awards to be presented in 2008 is the Mary Belle Grant Award, given to the artist or person closely associated with the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. Janie Hutchison, the longtime captain of volunteers, is the recipient.

It’s a date

For sure there will be gallons of beer, wine and other liquid refreshments at Friday night’s Brew At The Zoo, but guests shouldn’t forget to bring their appetites because there’s also going to be quite a selection of food. Chedd’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese, the Cherry Cricket, Continental Deli and the Paramount Cafe are just a few of the casual-dining spots supplying the eats; for tickets, call 303-376-4860.

The new headquarters for Epicurean Catering, 6800 S. Xanthia St. in Centennial, is the setting Monday for a cocktail party that kicks off the 2007 Holiday Hope Project. Sponsored by The Adoption Exchange’s guild, Wednesday’s Child Connection, the project has guild members filling stockings with gifts that will be given to Denver-area children in foster care over the holidays. Call Laura Lemon, 303-755-4756, ext. 276.

Sue Thomas, whose life was portrayed in the PAX television series “Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye,” is the keynote speaker for the 10th anniversary Women Against MS Luncheon. The Sept. 18 event is underwritten by

Ralph Holden and begins at noon in the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom. Godin & Baity is the title sponsor. Call 303-813-6687.
