Boulder — Colorado coach Dan Hawkins likes the way his football team has reacted to its 31-28 overtime victory over Colorado State last week.
The celebration did not carry over and interfere with the players’ preparation for the upcoming game against Arizona State (1-0) on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.
“By the time you get to Tuesday, last week’s game is so far removed from your consciousness,” Hawkins said this afternoon during his weekly media luncheon.
“One of the things we really try to talk to our football team about is, and it takes a certain amount of maturity, being able to say, ‘That game is over. What did we do well? What do we need to improve on? Let’s push on.’ ”
It’s a long season, Hawkins reminded the players.
“Getting caught in the highs and lows is certainly an easy thing to do,” he said. “But you should try to avoid that.
“I even told them that before the game, that regardless of what happens, let’s move on from it and get better.”
Quarterback Cody Hawkins, a redshirt freshman and elder son of the head coach, made an impressive college debut with 201 yards passing and two touchdowns. But Cody and his teammates appear to have their focus in the right place.
“Even though Monday was our day off, there were probably more guys in watching film of Arizona State than I’ve ever seen,” Cody Hawkins said.
