DURANGO, Colo.—The Durango City Council has voted to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq and provide them good health care.
The council voted 3-1 last night for what it called an orderly withdrawal.
Mayor Doug Lyon was the only dissenter.
The vote drew 65 people to the chambers for a two-hour debate. It elicited applause and tears.
Some said the city should stick to city business. Others said that when things are wrong in the country elected bodies have a responsibility to speak out.
Vietnam veteran Dick Dahl said that by his calculations the war has already cost La Plata County $40 million.
Iraq veteran Christopher Taylor said the soldiers he served with opposed the war.
Organizations that supported the vote for a withdrawal said more than 300 cities and towns have approved similar resolutions.
Lyon said no one had asked him about the war in Iraq when he ran for the council so he figures it is not his business as mayor.
