Here’s an insider’s look at the Leadville most tourists never see – a town that’s literary, sympathetic to vegetarians and still holds a few surprises for history buffs, says Leadville historian Gretchen Scanlon. Hustle up there today, for curtain call at the Independence Film Fest – the short film “Travelin’ Trains” plays at 1 p.m. at the National Mining Museum, followed by a screen of the rare 1906 silent film “From Leadville to Aspen: A Hold-Up in the Rockies” with live piano accompaniment.

Getting there: Leadville is high up, just east of the Continental Divide at 10,430 feet. Get there from Interstate 70, turn south on Colorado 91 just before Copper Mountain.
