Denver fire officials rescued a man who fell 10 feet into an elevator shaft today.

The man and two companions were exploring the former Gates Rubber Co. at Mississippi Avenue and Broadway when they entered a door through an alley, said Terry Neiman, assistant fire chief.

The young men — all in their 20s — walked about 10 feet in the dark when one of them fell into an elevator shaft. The man fell about 10 feet and landed on the bottom of the shaft that contained about 2 to 3 feet of water.

Fire officials were able to reach the man in the shaft through the basement door. When the man was rescued, he was semiconscious and was transported for treatment.

The injured man’s name and those of his two friends were not immediately available.
