SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—A Gering business is cited for safety and health violations in a March trench cave-in northwest of Scottsbluff that killed a 25-year-old employee.
Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration say Midwest Farm Service failed to take appropriate action to protect employees in the trench. They propose more than $150,000 in penalties for seven alleged violations.
Travis Ballinger was working on a pit to collect water for an irrigation system when the trench he was working in collapsed and he was buried under more than 2,000 pounds of dirt. Another man in the trench escaped, and a third man was above operating a backhoe.
The company has 15 working days to contest the citations.
