Las Vegas – Teams on the ground and in aircraft kept hunting for millionaire aviator Steve Fossett on Sunday after a new analysis of radar data provided fresh optimism.
Radar and satellite images from Sept. 3, the day Fossett, 63, disappeared in a small plane, led Air Force technicians to believe they had spotted clues to his route. The formal aerial search by the Civil Air Patrol and the Nevada National Guard had ended Sept. 19. Nothing was found by Sunday afternoon, however.
Government partially shuts down as budget deadline passes lansing, mich. Michigan’s state government partially shut down early today as the new fiscal year began with no budget deal in place to plug a $1.75 billion deficit.
Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm was still awaiting key votes on a tax increase from the Republican-controlled Senate after 12:01 a.m., the deadline for approving a state budget. The state has no authority to spend money without a budget in place.
Parts of a temporary budget fix that would have avoided a shutdown were approved Sunday, but lawmakers at midnight were still scrambling to reach a deal on the tax increases.
Granholm was waiting for the tax measures before signing a 30-day continuation budget.
Legislative leaders said they remained optimistic a deal would be reached in time.
Man who had sex-assault tape charged las vegas A man accused of holding and showing off a tape depicting the sex assault of a 3-year-old girl was taken into custody Sunday on a probation violation, authorities said.
Darrin Tuck, 26, arranged to surrender after evading arrest since Friday, said Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo. Prosecutors are set to formally charge Tuck with possession of child pornography and possibly promoting child pornography today, DeMeo said.
Tuck had been on probation for desertion and failure to pay child support, but his probation was revoked, authorities said.
Tuck has told authorities he found the tape in the desert, but authorities said he possessed it for as long as five months before turning it in. He was arrested last month in the case and released without bail until a court appearance.
The girl in the tape was located after authorities on Friday released an image of her. The girl’s mother contacted police but did not know about the assault, authorities said.
Authorities are still searching for Chester “Chet” Arthur Stiles, 34, who is suspected of sexually abusing the girl.
