DES MOINES, IOWA — The Iowa Republican Party on Tuesday moved the date of its caucuses, the nation’s first presidential nominating contest, to Jan. 3 in response to moves by other states to schedule early contests. Iowa’s caucuses tentatively had been scheduled for Jan. 14 for both parties. Democrats have yet to set a caucus date but are believed to be considering Jan. 3 or Jan. 5. If they choose the later date, it would mean the first split caucuses since the 1970s.
Bob Jones III endorses Romney
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Bob Jones III, chancellor of the Christian fundamentalist school named for his family, is endorsing Republican Mitt Romney for president. Romney’s campaign confirmed Jones’ endorsement Tuesday. Jones doesn’t want former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to win the GOP nomination or Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton to win the election.
S.C. Dems aim for earlier primary
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Democrats decided Tuesday to seek permission to move their presidential primary to Jan. 26, three days earlier than scheduled. The Democratic National Committee must OK the date.
