A 21-year-old woman was arrested after she sped away from an officer in a stolen car and crashed into the cement base of a light pole, police said.

Heather M. McCann of Denver was arrested for investigation of aggravated car theft, eluding police, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless driving, said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman.

An officer spotted the stolen car, a dark green Nissan Maxima, at Jay Street and 17th Avenue at 4:59 a.m., Davis said.

The driver did not stop when the officer turned on his emergency lights. The officer followed the car but did not accelerate when the Maxima suddenly sped up in an attempt to flee, Davis said.

Soon afterward, the Maxima was northbound on Wadsworth Boulevard and crashed into the concrete light-pole base in a parking lot, he said.

Police say a man who was in the car ran away. He has not been arrested.

McCann jumped out of the car and was caught running. Her face was bloody with a minor injury, Davis said. She was treated at a hospital and taken to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, he said.
