Lakewood candidates who say the city is headed in the right direction prevailed with voters Tuesday, including Bob Murphy, who staved off a challenge by community activist Rita Bertolli in the mayor’s race.

Murphy, the owner of a small business, emphasized his six years on the planning commission and eight years on the City Council. He said his positive campaign appealed to voters.

Bertolli, who did not return a call asking for comment, called for a change from “business as usual.”

Linda Delay, a homemaker who has made previous runs for mayor, was a distant third.

In Arvada, Bob Frie received a decisive nod to become mayor for the third time, with current Mayor Ken Fellman failing to win a third term.

Frie, who was mayor from 1981-89 and from 1991-99, said his contest and others showed that “voters wanted a change.”

Golden City Councilman Jacob Smith edged ahead of mayoral incumbent Chuck Baroch. Mary Weaver, a councilwoman who has sued the city over executive sessions, ran third.

Controversial Edgewater Mayor Ronalda Goodner was swept out of office by Bonnie McNulty, wife of current Councilman Nelson McNulty. Goodner was third behind Douglas Holmes.

Goodner was served Oct. 26 with a restraining order by a former girlfriend who cited domestic abuse.
