LONGMONT, Colo.—The former treasurer of a volunteer emergency-response unit in Longmont has surrendered on charges of stealing thousands of dollars from the organization.

Corby Layer faces theft and forgery charges. She turned herself in Friday and was released on $10,000 bail.

Layer’s phone number is unlisted and she couldn’t be reached.

She is accused of using her former position with the Longmont Emergency Unit to take out loans and open fraudulent accounts for her personal use.

The unit helps police and firefighters at emergencies and is the only dive-rescue service in Boulder County. It’s funded by the city, the county and private donations.

Police began investigating after other officers of the unit reported concerns.
