Cañon City wants to play, too. Joining the ever-growing list of towns offering wet and colorful play in their river-flanked downtown, Canon City is planning a whitewater playpark. Just about every Colorado town with a trickle is courting those silly, spinning kayakers these days, with at least 15 parks springing from Colorado’s rivers the past few years.
On Nov. 23, the Cañon City tourist train through the Royal Gorge will donate ticket sales to the effort to build a playpark in the Arkansas River through town. Because it doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to winter yet, might as well plan for next summer’s paddling with a fun fundraiser.
Tickets are $35 for coach and $65 for the cool dome car, and all sales support the Whitewater Kayak Recreation Park. Yeah, you read that right WKRP in Cañon City. Word is Les Nessman rips in a kayak.
