An editor of Ski Racing Magazine was arrested today by Jefferson County authorities on suspicion of trolling the Internet for underaged sex partners.
Donald J. Cameron, 40, of Thornton, was jailed on suspicion of sexually exploiting a child using the Internet and promoting obscenities to a minor.
According to the arrest document, Cameron used the screenname Hockeypower08 in a Yahoo chat room on Oct. 17, when he sent an Instant Message to someone. That person told him she was almost 15 years old. He asked her the size of her breasts, according to the document.
The next day, Cameron sent another instant message asking her for her “hottest pics” and if she was free the next day for oral sex, according to the document.
On Nov. 1, Cameron sent an instant message asking the person to view his webcam, which showed him masturbating. He did the same on Nov. 17 and included his cell phone number, the document stated.
Cameron later messaged he thought she was 17, but the investigator confirmed that she was not yet 15. Cameron responded he didn’t care and asked her to call him. The investigator called and asked him to show his face on the webcam, which he refused.
He began masturbating again on the webcam, then told the contact to wait 3 years and call him when she was 18.
On Nov. 19, the investigator sent a message to Cameron and identified herself as law enforcement, telling him to call her, which he did. The document concluded that “Cameron admitted to knowing that the (investigator’s screen name) we were portraying was under 15, but stated he really didn’t know for sure.”
Gary Black, owner of Ski Racing International, the parent company of the magazine, said Cameron had been the editor of Ski Racing when Black bought it back from a Boulder company four years ago. Black moved the magazine to Salt Lake City. Cameron refused to move and has been working in an editorial capacity from his home since then, Black said.
Cameron could not be reached for comment. Black said Cameron gathered on-line data for media covering the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, then worked in the sports department of the Boston Herald. Ed Brennan, night sports editor for the Boston Herald, said he couldn’t remember Cameron working there.
Cameron will be advised of his charges in Jefferson County District Court on Nov. 26.
