A 78-year-old man was hospitalized after he was burned following an explosion at his remote El Paso County home, triggered when he lit his gas stove, officials say.

The man’s condition was not known, said Lt. Lari Sevene, spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department.

The man was trying to light his stove to prepare a Thanksgiving Day meal when it exploded at about 11:15 a.m., Sevene said.

Firefighters believe a gas leak may have caused the explosion, she said.

It took several minutes for firefighters to reach the remote house at 33175 Hanisch Road, and the home was a total loss, Sevene said.

“It was not a good Thanksgiving for him,” she said.
