CSU SPIKERS REACH SEMIS

The No. 20-ranked Colorado State volleyball team swept San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament Thursday at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, winning 30-22, 30-20, 30-19.

The top-seeded Rams (22-6) advanced to face fifth-seeded Utah today in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Utah on Thursday swept No. 4 seed Texas Christian, 30-15, 30-28, 30-23.

CSU had three players with 10 or more kills, led by Mekana Barnes’ 15.

Also, No. 2 seed Nevada-Las Vegas earned a four-game quarterfinal win in eliminating Wyoming, 30-12, 30-22, 27-30, 30-21. The Rebels qualified for a fourth consecutive trip to the MWC tournament semfinals.

UNLV today will face third-seeded Brigham Young (21-6), a 3-2 victor over New Mexico. BYU rallied to down the Lobos 33-35, 30-28, 28-30, 30-19, 16-14.

New football coach at Adams St. Adams State named former assistant coach Marty Heaton its new football coach. He replaces outgoing coach Wayne McGinn, who resigned Nov. 11, athletic director Larry Mortensen said.

Heaton, currently the defensive coordinator at Colorado Mines, will remain with the Orediggers for their matchup with Western Oregon in the Dixie Rotary Bowl on Dec. 1.

Heaton kick-started the football program at Highlands Ranch as head coach from 1987-96. He is a 1982 Adams State graduate and was a Grizzlies assistant from 2000-05.

“Coach Heaton is, above all, a great teacher and a mentor,” ASC president David Svaldi said. “We are fortunate to have him back.”
