
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands — Stanford gambled against Connecticut, and the second-ranked Huskies made them pay.
Kalana Greene, left wide open on many plays, scored 18 points to help the Huskies defeat No. 4 Stanford (3-1) 66-54 on Thursday night at the Paradise Jam. Freshman standout Maya Moore led Connecticut (3-0) with 19 points.
“We basically gambled off of some of their players, hoping some of their players would not make shots and they made them,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “They ran on us and got too many easy baskets.”
Moore, who added 12 rebounds and four assists, scored 12 of her points during a decisive 23-6 run that gave the Huskies a 60-34 lead with 9:40 remaining.
Women’s top 25 games: The Paris sisters proved to be too much for Arizona State to handle.
Courtney Paris had 16 points and 19 rebounds, and sister Ashley scored 21 points to help No. 10 Oklahoma (1-2) win for the first time this season, 69-57 over No. 14 Arizona State (2-2) at the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico.
Jasmine Thomas scored 15 points to lead No. 9 Duke (4-0) to a 53-41 victory over No. 22 Purdue (2-1) in the Paradise Jam.
Patrice Reado scored 14 points to lead No. 11 Texas A&M (3-0) to a 70-36 win over Wichita State (1-2) in the Paradise Jam.
Allyssa DeHaan scored 23 points to help No. 19 Michigan State (4-1) hold off Kansas State 68-65 in the Caribbean Challenge.
Kari Kincaid hit six 3-pointers and finished with 18 points to keep the Wildcats (2-3) in the game. Kimberly Dietz added 16 points.
Men’s top 25 games: John Vaughan scored 21 points and Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas each added 18 to lead George Mason to an 87-77 upset of No. 18 Kansas State in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Michael Beasley had at least 30 points for the third time in four games for K-State (3-1).
