Colorado gets its first chance to see David Beckham on opening day of the Major League Soccer season. The Rapids open the season March 29 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City against the Los Angeles Galaxy, the league said Tuesday.
Last season, Beckham did not play in L.A.’s trip to Colorado because of an injury. The rest of the MLS schedule will be released in February.
Two DU players make national junior team.
University of Denver hockey players Rhett Rakhshani and Tyler Ruegsegger, both forwards, were named to the 2008 U.S. national junior team. Rakhshani and Ruegsegger are among 22 players who will make up the Team USA roster at the IIHF World Junior Championship to be played Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Pardubice and Liberec, Czech Republic.
Avalanche prospects Mike Carman of the University of Minnesota and Kevin Montgomery of London in the Ontario Hockey League also were named to the team.
Mammoth hires Hamley.
The Colorado Mammoth hired former National Lacrosse League coach of the year Bob Hamley to be an assistant coach on Bob McMahon’s staff. Hamley worked with McMahon before, as an assistant in 2002 with the Albany Attack and in 2003 with the Arizona Sting. In 2005, Hamley was named the league’s coach of the year and general manager of the year.
Ex-CSU standout hired at Jackson State.
The Jackson State women’s basketball team hired former Colorado State standout Michael Morris as an assistant coach. Morris was a three-year starter with the Rams from 2002-06.
Former CC runner qualifies for Olympic Trials.
Former Colorado College cross country runner Gretchen Grindle has qualified for the Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston on April 20. Grindle will compete with 130 runners to fill one of the three remaining spots on the United States team.
