Perfect weather and a huge slate of new events this year helped the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo to its best opening day in its 102-year history.

Opening day Saturday drew 44,616 visitors to the 100-acre National Western Complex. The previous record opening was 41,000 in 2006, the centennial anniversary and the biggest attendance on record for the 16-day show, 726,972.

Preshow sales this year matched the 2006 advance purchases. Despite blizzard conditions last year, the show drew 649,637.
