Moviegoers didn’t exactly go crazy this past weekend over “Mad Money,” the first film released by Douglas County-based Starz LLC’s production venture, Overture Films.
The heist comedy starring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes debuted with just less than $9.2 million in receipts over the four-day holiday weekend, finishing tied for No. 7 on the box-office charts, according to estimates.
“It’s a decent opening but not spectacular,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of .
The film received a “rotten,” or bad, review from 64 of 78 critics tracked by .
The movie had a reported production budget of $22 million. Overture, however, paid $6 million for the North American distribution rights and receives a portion of ticket sales, said Peter Adee, president of worldwide marketing, distribution and new media.
“We figure we will top out at $25 million,” Adee said of the film’s projected box-office take. “And through home video and TV and pay TV, we should be very profitable.”
