Cab passenger arrested after bank robbery

ENGLEWOOD — Englewood police on Monday thwarted an alleged bank robber when they stopped the cab he was riding in.

The FBI said in a release that a man entered Liberty Savings Bank at 9131 S. Broadway in Highlands Ranch about 12:30 p.m.

The man told bank employees that he had a weapon and demanded cash. Authorities did not reveal how much, if any, money was taken.

Police said the man fled. Witnesses saw him get into a cab. Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies put out a description of the cab. Englewood police saw it near South Broadway and Hampden and pulled it over.

The FBI determined the passenger was the suspect, and he was arrested.

The man was identified as Charles James Ulrich, 49.

Council eases rules on some wind turbines

The Denver City Council on Monday made it easier for owners of property in commercial districts to erect small wind turbines.

The measure increases height limits for wind generators in commercial districts and eases height restrictions for installing flush-mounted rooftop solar panels.

But the council decided that in residential areas and for commercial properties that abut a residence, the zoning board should still review applications for the wind generators.

Ex-rec center worker pleads guilty to sex assault

GOLDEN — A former day-camp instructor at a Lakewood recreational center who was to go on trial Monday has pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child.

Michael DiPalma, 33, entered the plea Friday. Sentencing is April 4.

DiPalma, who lives in Centennial, took an 8-year-old boy to his car and spanked his bare bottom 20 times in July 2006. The boy attended programs at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center, 1295 S. Reed St.

The case went to trial in September 2006 but the jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict. It was set for retrial.

Motorists warned about police impersonator

Denver police are warning motorists about a police officer impersonator or impersonators driving a bogus police car and making traffic stops.

The impersonators stole money and other items after stopping victims Monday in the 3500 block of Colorado Boulevard and on Jan. 18 in the 500 block of Santa Fe, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

The vehicles appeared to be the same type and style as Denver police units — white unmarked Fords.

Police say use your cellphone to contact police if you suspect the person attempting to stop you is not a legitimate officer.
