DENVER—Starz Entertainment LLC, which operates premium cable channels, is planning to produce an original television series based on the award-winning movie “Crash.”

The 13-episode, one-hour series will be co-produced by Lionsgate and executives who worked on the movie, Starz said Monday. Production is scheduled to begin in the spring.

The move is the latest effort by Starz to diversify beyond premium channels. It also has an Internet movie service and two original one-half hour comedy series, “Head Case” and “Hollywood Residential.”

Produced in 2004, “Crash” looked at issues related to racial tolerance in Los Angeles. It won Oscars for best picture, best original screenplay and for editing.

Don Cheadle, one of the film’s producers, said the TV series will expand subject matter beyond race relations.

In addition to Cheadle, members of the movie production team who will work on the series include Paul Haggis, film director, co-writer and producer; Bobby Moresco, co-writer and producer; Bob Yari, producer; Mark R. Harris, producer, and Tom Nunan, executive producer.

Based in suburban Englewood, Starz Entertainment sells premium channels under the Starz and Encore brands. It is a subsidiary of cable entrepreneur John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp., a diversified media holding company.
