Getting your player ready...

Don’t think of camp as just a way to keep kids occupied during the long days of summer.

The right summer camp can accelerate a child’s development and provide lifelong skills, psychologists say.

At camp, kids get to live communally, engage in a variety of recreational activities and spend time away from home and family. Those are the three things psychologist Christopher Thurber describes as a “unique triad” of learning opportunities children can’t get in any other setting.

“At boarding school, you get community and away from home,” but you can’t get a recreational dimension because it’s based in academics, says Thurber, author of “The Summer Camp Handbook.”

Parents often feel pressured to provide academic opportunities to help their children succeed in the future but neglect the notion of fun, says Peg Smith, chief executive of the American Camp Association.

Smith says chances to progress emotionally, physically and socially are just as critical as developing the mind — and are readily available during summer camp stays.

Children gain independence from exploring and succeeding at new adventures.

“Self-esteem doesn’t come from somebody telling you that you are good at something or that you are special,” Thurber says. “It comes from a feeling of competence and really accomplishing something worthwhile.”

A recent nationwide study by the American Camping Association found that 96 percent of parents believe summer camp helped their children feel more confident and capable.

“Youths learn by experiencing things firsthand,” Smith says. “Fun is the feeling they get when they are learning.”

SeaSea Fuhrman is a 22-year-old college graduate who started attending camp when she was 10. As a child, camp was just a fun, safe place where youthful concerns about social stressors such as popularity or body image could be forgotten.

As an adult, Fuhrman now sees those summers spent sharing a cabin with a dozen other girls as the foundation for future relationships.

“You had to learn how to be respectful of other people’s spaces and neuroses,” says Fuhrman, who is administrator for Congregation Emanuel’s Maurice B. Shwayder Camp. “I am still best friends with one girl who was in my cabin when I was 10.”

When selecting a camp, parents must judge if their kids are ready to be away from home, says psychologist Brad Jackson, who works with kids at Cheley/Children’s Hospital Burn Camp, a program for youths who have suffered burns.

For example, a child who already has experienced day care or sleep- overs with friends will probably like an extended camp stay more than a kid who has never left the nest.

Jackson says to keep in mind that children get different benefits from experiences based on their age.

Elementary-school-aged kids care about their skills and love being able to show adults what they can do, Jackson says. The kinds of camps that will suit them best include lots of chances for exploring and completing hands-on projects.

Middle-school children are interested in connecting with groups and their peers. Camps that focus on teamwork can showcase individual strengths while at the same time contributing to the overall success of the group.

Adolescence is a time when teens want to develop their own identity and learn how to connect on a deeper level, usually romantically. Supervised outings where girls and boys can interact is good practice for how they will respond to intimacy when they are alone at college or trade school, Jackson says.

Fuhrman said camp provided a support system that helped her navigate conflicts with others or within herself.

“Camp was one of the only kind of environments where I felt free to be who I was,” Fuhrman said.

“When you were upset about things that happened in normal circumstances, you wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to anyone about it.

“At camp, you can talk to your friends or to staff members,” she says.

“You learn that it’s OK to ask for help and lean on other people, and it’s OK to trust and build friendships that are worthwhile.”
