FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Fort Collins man has sold a getaway car used by Depression era bank robber John Dillinger to the National Museum of Crime and Punishment, in Washington, D.C.

Sandy Jones sold the car and one of the largest private collections of 1930s gangster artifacts to the museum, which plans to open in May.

Jones said it took about 35 years to build his collection. It included Dillinger’s death mask and bulletproof vest, poetry by Bonnie Parker and family photographs of Dillinger, Parker and Clyde Barrow.

In a separate sale, the museum also bought the 1933 Essex Terraplane 8 that Dillinger used as a getaway car.

“I’ve always kind of liked the different side of history,” Jones said. “I just thought these guys were kind of colorful.”
