Catching up with the social sceneIt’s Leap Year, after all, so when the Shining Stars Foundation started planning its sixth Snowball Gala, someone wisely decided the 2008 edition should be something so special that it could be repeated only every four years.

“Leap Around the World” is going to wow its guests with fire and flamenco dancing performances; music by Hazel Miller and Tom Hagerman, the violinist for DeVotchKa; a silent film furnished by the Denver Film Society; painters completing works of art to be auctioned on the spot; and food from such new and old favorites as Three Tomatoes Catering, Strings, Jing Modern Chinese, Tambien, Mezcal, Steuben’s and Vesta Dipping Grill. Beverage Distributors will furnish libations.

In addition, tribute will be paid to Peggy Rudden and Roxane White for their long-standing commitment to the welfare of children. Rudden is executive director of Advocates for Children, and White is Denver’s manager of Human Services.

It all happens Feb. 29 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $100 advance or $125 the day of.

The Shining Stars Foundation provides sport, recreational and outreach programs for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Proceeds will help fund the foundation’s National Winter Games Week held every March at Buttermilk Mountain. It brings 55 recently diagnosed children into the Shining Stars program through a week of snow sports, team-building, dancing, games and music.
