12-year-old girl saves siblings from house fire
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — As flames consumed her home and prevented her parents from helping, a quick-thinking 12-year-old girl saved two younger siblings Saturday by kicking out a second-story window and easing them down, firefighters said.
Derrionna Adams then leapt 15 feet to safety, said East St. Louis Fire Chief William Fennoy.
“She kicked the window out and stepped up onto the roof of the first floor and was able to pull her two siblings out,” Fennoy said. “This was a blessed day.”
Firefighters suspect a space heater started the blaze, Fennoy said.
Businessman arrested in wife’s 1981 slaying
LOS ANGELES — A Japanese businessman has been arrested on suspicion of murder more than a quarter-century after an infamous shooting that left his wife dead and sparked an international furor, police said.
Kazuyoshi Miura, 60, had been convicted in Japan in 1994 of the 1981 murder of his wife, Kazumi Miura, but that verdict was overturned by the country’s high courts 10 years ago.
Miura was arrested Friday while visiting Saipan, a U.S. commonwealth territory in the Pacific, after cold-case detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department worked with authorities there and in Guam, police said in a brief statement.

FEMA to test trailers for formaldehyde on request
NEW ORLEANS — Occupants of FEMA trailers placed in disaster areas may now get their units tested for formaldehyde contamination if they file a request.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that for the first time it will open up the testing program to hurricane evacuees living in thousands of federally supplied trailers and mobile homes along the Gulf Coast, and to anyone using similar FEMA- supplied trailers in other states that have been affected by floods, tornadoes and other disasters.
Coloradan gets $17,000 for Washington’s hair
LEXINGTON, Ky. — It might not even really be George Washington’s hair — but it still sold for $17,000.
Four strands reportedly clipped from the first president were sold at auction Friday night to a Richmond man who declined to give his name.
Colorado resident Christa Allen said her father, a Philadelphia lawyer, had given her the hair, which was pressed under glass in a locket and accompanied by a watch.
Allen told potential buyers that the hair had been handed down since it was clipped from Washington’s head. The Historical Society of Montgomery County, Pa., inspected Allen’s evidence and gave her its backing.
The hair is thought to have been snipped from Washington’s body when it was briefly disinterred in 1837.
Hundreds may have been exposed to hepatitis at posh spot
NEW YORK — Hundreds of patrons of a posh Manhattan hot spot, including A-list celebrities who attended actor Ashton Kutcher’s 30th birthday party there, may have been exposed to hepatitis A, health officials said.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene offered free vaccines through today to anyone who had been to Socialista in the West Village during the city’s Fashion Week this month after a bartender there was found to have the infectious disease.
More than 700 people, including celebrities who attended Kutcher’s bash, may have been exposed to the liver disease, health department officials said. Demi Moore, Bruce Willis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ivanka Trump and Madonna reportedly attended the event.
