ARVADA — The trial that will decide whether Rolo the dog lives or dies began this morning in Arvada Municipal Court.

A jury was selected.

The 5-year-old German shepherd is accused of being a dangerous animal after biting a neighbor last summer.

Since then, Rolo was confined at the Table Mountain Animal Center before being moved three weeks ago to a private kennel.

His owner, Laura Hagan, is fighting a court order to have him euthanized. Hagan’s neighbor, Kathy Hardin, said she was bitten by Rolo after he escaped and she was trying to protect her baby.

In December, Jefferson County District Court reversed the death sentence and said the municipal court has authority to reconsider the case.

Rolo’s situation has attracted community attention, inspiring rallies by supporters and even a fund-raising song written by a former member of the Kingston Trio.
