Former Heritage star Mark Dylla, now at the University of Georgia, recently was selected the Southeastern Conference male freshman swimmer of the year. Dylla made all-SEC first team and won the 200-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 42.23 seconds at the SEC championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His time, the fastest in the nation this season, eclipsed the league mark by 0.16. Dylla finished sixth in the 100 butterfly (46.99) and was on the 400 medley relay team that was fourth, the 400 and 800 freestyle relays that finished fifth, and the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays that were sixth. Dylla has qualified automatically for the NCAA championships, March 27-29 in Seattle, in the 100 and 200 butterfly. He has a provisional qualifying time in the 100 backstroke.
Drew’s decision
For Drew Hawkins, it came down to a scholarship at a Division II program or pursuing the Division I-A big boys. It will be the latter for the Holy Family quarterback and younger son of University of Colorado coach Dan Hawkins. “I wanted a place where they win and you get a shot at playing,” said youngest Hawkins, who made Class 2A first-team all-state. As a preferred walk-on at Boise State, the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, who is growing late and will redshirt his first season, will join brother-in-law Tim Brady, a senior linebacker.
