RIFLE — Decades-old rules governing so-called “man camps” that house an influx of oil and gas workers will get updating.
Speaking at the Northwest Colorado Oil and Gas Forum in Rifle, Therese Pilonetti of the state’s health department said the rules governing such temporary housing have not been updated since 1968.
Changes could include requirements to make the sites less inviting to bears and other wildlife, making the camps more accessible to medical responders and making sure on-site emergency medical technicians are licensed in Colorado.
Temporary worker camps have sprung up in western Colorado amid an energy boom to ease a housing shortage and reduce traffic by allowing employees to live closer to drilling rigs.
